AstroPhysics

OPENING QUESTION: Let's see what your thoughts are on, hmmmm, Cosmology.

To wit: What is Cosmology?

What are the baffling questions facing astronomers who study the Universe on the large scale (Cosmologists)

While were at it, we have very strong data that shows that the Universe is.... <how old again?>

LEARNING GOAL(S): I will gain an appreciation for the immense scale of time and the future of the Universe during today's class

CALEDAR: They days, they be a moving on-- make sure your current work is, well current!

WORDS O' THE DAY:

WORK O' THE DAY:

NOTE: We usually wrap up the year with this unit. I'm moving it up this year to give us PLENTY of opportunity to take part in a nightly viewing (you are required to make ONE)

What would you like to learn about in astronomy, astrophysics or cosmology (the study of the Universe as a whole)?

Let's take a few moments to discuss THE LAST QUESTION

I went out for a bite last week with my former student teacher. He is currently crushing physics teaching at Bellarmine. He *also* loves that story, also his all-time favorite!

Let's socratically seminarize that now with our official "Talking Bear", you can't talk unless you're holding Teddy.

If someone passes you Teddy then you *must* talk (gulp!)

Potential Topics:

  • The story is 65 years old (-ish), how well does the science hold up?
  • The story is 65 years old (-ish), how well does the writing hold up?
  • What are the various cosmological theories that posit the final state of the Universe?
    • The Big Crunch?
    • The Big Freeze?
    • The modified Big Freeze?
    • The Big Rip?

Let's morph the conversation more along the lines of various astronomy/astrophysics sorts of stuff. What sparks your interest?
